Dave, thanks for taking all the photos. It's really helpful to see style and things you need to improve on when looking at them. I'm sitting in a restaurant in el Rosario right now before heading out to go to punta San Carlos. I will send you the pictures I took when I get back from this trip. Thanks again the photos are great.

First day at cape Sebastian. 3.4 m 68 L board on 30 to 35 knots wind. Managed to get out and in and gybe. Very stoked.

Fin hit my helmet in the water. Glad I wore the helmet

Your most welcome Joe! Enjoy PSC! I'll look forward to seeing your shots of Cape and PSC when you come home. :D

Hey Dave, so you're finally done! Thanks for all the galleries and the great session logs! It was great sharing the experience with you!! I'm already looking forward to next year but in the meantime I'm reliving the stoke through your photos. You captured some great moments!

Your very welcome for the pictures and sharing the adventure - it was a truly awesome trip! Now I`m done. The "odessey" (as Chuck called it) has drawn to a close.

S34 – windsurf – Swell City (July 4)
Image

Loosen up. Slept at Wind Mountain Pete`s campsite atop Wind Mountain and enjoyed the subset and sunrise views. Thanks Pete! Then off the Swell City for a little session to loosen up the body (took a big hit to left leg an left arm getting hammered by a torquey gust exiting a gybe, so time to get right back at it. Got rock star parking right up front and had a solo session. Steadier wind than last night (so I took out the 92 this time), but flatter water and a header going out that limited jumping opportunities. Always a nice way to start the day!

S35 – windsurf – Doug`s Beach (July 4)
Image

On, off, on again. After a few errands in town I headed off to Doug`s Beach. It looked way steadier and more swell then yesterday. I took my time getting set-up to allow the swell some time to build and poof – it went from solid mid-three`s to nothing! Never seen that before so waited for the rebound and it did happen, but soon after there was some north in it so it made jumping outbound difficult and turned it into a bit of a point feast. Time to head off to Rufus to see if I can find Wind Mountain Pete (WMP).

S36 – windsurf – Rufus (July 4)
Image

Swell. Rufus had big swell and that`s what I like – big swell (quote adapted from "Hard Winds a Blow'n")! Saw Wind Mountain Pete`s van from the highway so pulled up next to it and got rigged (4.0/74) and took to the water looking for WMP. Bumped into Cash and found there was some nice, big clean rolling swell (the best I have seen in the Gorge on this trip so far). WMP said, “Finally a real Rufus day!” Now that was fun! Third time lucky!

Image

That makes 36 sessions (that number has a nice ring to it) in 16 days. It has been an incredible trip and we were on quite a roll! That is likely it for me as Tuesday is a travel day. Then again I am staying out at Mary Hill State Park so a morning splash and dash might happen!

Home after eight days on 4.5 or less. I sailed almost all days at the Rock (Pistol River). It was about as good as it gets, so much fun. I'm finally figuring out how to ride the waves there, a few more years and I should have it dialed. Unless the Cape has South swell I much prefer the Rock. The wind is clean and there are many waves to be had.

What I learned for onshore wave riding. Think speed, all the time, make sure you do everything going really fast. Going out and riding the wave. Take a bigger sail to help.
Open the clew early in the bottom turn. Only bother with a turn on a wave if you're going fast already. Visualise how you are going to get on the wave at mach 5. You can get to the peak with a quick snap up to the peak at the very end, then a quick snap back down. Start bottom turning with very wide hands, then they automatically come back together with the top turn. This is key.

Ben has it figured out already, this is his second summer there. His tips were very helpful.

Me a few days ago on a biggish wave at the rock. Pictures thanks to Trudy Larry.

One of my table tops. It was too windy for scaredy cat to learn new jumps, but I did try about ten backloops.

A typical session. Max for the day was around 56km on the water.

Have fun! Head to the rock if the Cape is flat and too strong. Just remember to always point your mast away from the beach if you fall.

Day 2 Cape Sebastian. 25 to 30 knots . Beginner friendly waves (knee high and flat in between sets). Rigged 3.4m and 68L board. Had the beach to myself today. Feeling alone though.

Everyone was at Pistol River (Rock). Give it a try, tomorrow is the last day for a while.

Nice work Ryan those shots looks great! Mast high swell at the Rock, wicked! I had one good day there this year and should try and sail it more but can never tear myself away from the Cape.

Ryan wrote:Think speed, all the time, make sure you do everything going really fast.

I heard that a few times this year from others and I think that's the key. Too bad I have to wait a year before I can try it out. :D See you in the fall.

Lots of great shots on BWD from the trip, wish I could go back now.

Heather and I are making our way down to Pistol River after a stop in the Gorge. Should be there for a week starting next Monday. Drop a line if you are coming down. Got my 3.0 and wave board packed.
