Broken Sail

Windsurfing shop talk

I broke a sail today at Jericho. I wish I could say it happened while doing something amazing but I can't. Today I brought my Retro 7.5 for the first time. This is a sail I bought second hand a couple months ago off craigslist; a 2007, reasonable condition for $50. It is a big sail for me and I was really excited to sail it for the first time. After rigging, tweaking, and carying it to the water I lifted the sail on my head and balanced it there while waiting for enough wind to beach start. Then bang! My head was no longer supporting the sail, it was sticking through it. :o Kind of disappointing to say the least. My 7.5 adventure ended before it began.

So that's the story. Now the questions.
1. Do you think it is worth fixing a broken panel in a 2007 Retro or should I move on with my life. The X ply seems okay but the 2 remaining small monofilm panels are hazey like the panel that broke.
2. Where would I get it repaired locally and what would it cost?

Thanks for listening.

1. Use tuck tape if you're on a budget

2. Use North Sail Richmond for professional repairs. Ask for Dennis

Try another CL sail and you may have better luck; otherwise just tape it and avoid throwing money into it

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check North Sails and get a quote. Unfortunately the panel cannot be taped. It split in multiple directions.

My advice: Chuck it.

Last time I had a panel replaced at North it was $50.
Anything can be taped! Ask Alton for some tips!
Those were the good old days, Alton, I miss you windsurfing. :D

A roll of Tuck Tape is around $10 at Home Depot.

I wouldn't spend any more than that. Likely all panels are brittle from exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

PS still gusty and shifty at the spit! Time for Mags99.

I picked up my 7.5 Retro from North Sails in Richmond today. I took it to Dennis and he replaced the broken panel for only $40 bucks (plus tax). Seems like a good deal to me. A pro repair job that looks like it should hold up well.

I am keeping my fingers crossed there is still time this season to try this large sail (Big for me :D). Hopefully this weekend.
