This thread presents some weather data for some of the winter sailing spots - working from north to south - Comox (airport data), Columbia Beach (Ballenas data), Centennial, Locust, and Whidbey Island (Smith Island data).

A few cautions:
  • Only two locations have sensors right at the beach (most accurate data) - Centennial and Locust
  • Comox Airport likely under reports for both Goose Spit and Air Force Beach
  • Ballenas likely over reports for Columbia Beach
  • Smith Island likely over report for Joseph Whidbey State Park and Ebey Landing
  • Smith Island data includes both west and southeast wind events

Overall
  • Most days: Columbia Beach (Ballenas), Whidbey Island, Locust, Comox, Boundary Bay (from perception I would place Comox much higher on the list)
  • Most days over 25 mph: Same order with Comox now over taking Locust - Columbia Beach, Whidbey Island, Comox, Locust, Boundary Bay
  • Summer: Columbia Beach (Ballenas), Whidbey Island, Locust, Comox, Centennial

  • 11 months have 20 mph days
  • 8 months of the year have 25 mph days
  • Winter month are all good with February and November offering the most days over 25 mph

wind data - Ballenas (for CB).jpg
wind data - Ballenas (for CB).jpg (75.44 KiB) Viewed 2375 times

  • Ballenas likely over reports for Columbia Beach
  • Wind througout the year - all 12 months show 20 mph days
  • 11 months of the year have 25 mph days
  • November and December the two months with the most days over 25 mph
  • Spring (Jan, Feb, Mar) has more days than fall (Oct, Nov, Dec)
  • Strongest showing in the summer - this rings true with sessions at Pipers
  • Wind direction shows some northwest days which also rings true for San Pareil and Pipers

wind data - CNL.jpg
wind data - CNL.jpg (82.99 KiB) Viewed 2375 times

  • Fewer days
  • Cold weather sailing dominates
  • 7 months of the year have 20 mph days
  • only 3 months of the year have 25 mph days - February, November and December (suprised March doesn't show better)
  • More days in spring (Jan, Feb, Mar) but stronger days in the fall (Oct, Nov, Dec)
  • Summer is kite weather
  • Look at all the east wind (about half)

wind data - LCB 2.jpg
wind data - LCB 2.jpg (77.92 KiB) Viewed 2375 times

  • More wind than Centennial
  • 12 months have 20 mph days
  • 8 months of the year have 25 mph days including April, July and October (warmer)
  • Spring (Jan, Feb, Mar) and fall (Oct, Nov, Dec) are fairly balanced (number of days and number of strong days)
  • Stronger showing in than Centennial in the late summer through the early fall
  • April has the most days, but February, November and December show more days over 25 mph
  • South wind dominates (the north wind may be over stated as the sensor was misreading direction for a while)
