I managed fine with open palm mitts that I eventually rolled up and out of the way once my hands went through the freeze/thaw cycle in the first 10 mins. I underrigged for the forecast and my session mostly sucked. James somehow rode for easily at least an hour with 7mm surf gloves and soft handles with no complaints, the arm pump would have killed me after ten minutes.
