However, the massive weed patches have broken up.

There were tons of weeds out there Friday, I hit a few big patches.

Look closely at Dave's fins in his photo.

How often do people rig sails smaller than 4.2 at Boundary Bay? I've been wondering if I should start hunting for a decent 3.5 m2 sail.

Hey Doug, I looked back at my stats on BWD and I use mine maybe 3 or 4 times a year around Vancouver, at the most. When it's that windy though you will also need a smaller volume board, or do you have a small board? They usually require a 340 mast as well. For the first few years I would sit it out when it got that crazy, then after a few seasons on the Oregon coast I got used to it. :D

I have a plethora of small boards. 85 L wave ish (Mistral Syncro), an 80 L ish Roberts (21.5”) and a 72 L Seatrend ATV that I used to sail at Jericho with a cammed 5.3 SW Syncro when I weighed 115 lbs. I also have a 3.3 Revolution from like 1993 that probably has the worlds smallest range of wind that makes it sailable.

Yeah, that’s why I bought some new gear last year :)

Well you might as well get a small sail then, you might not use it much here but it sucks not having it when we get a big storm does arrive. You don't want to be sitting on the beach. You'll get some use out of it if you go to the Gorge in the summer as well.

I agree that it’s nice to have a small (sub-4m) sail at Centennial. It doesn’t have to be the latest design, just <10 years old and in good shape to survive the intense conditions.
Although I only used it a few times last year, it made for fun on those days. I find my old 3.5m Ezzy Wave SE works fine on an 85 litre board as long as I use a small fin. Nicer with a 75 litre board though.
It rigs on a 370 or 340 mast but feels much more forgiving on the 340.

My small sail (at 175lbs) is a 3.7 North Insticnt 2004. Picked it up cheap in 2008. Tried the first couple of years on my nice 400 mast. Finally got a cheap powerex 60% carbon and massive difference. Not quite as nice as my newer sails on better masts but just fine for only used say average 2-3X/year. I'd rather put my $ into gear I will used often enough I'm likely to wear it out. Suggestion I'm making here is you could go back 15 years and get the right sized mast.

Edit - I just remembered wind foiling. I'd say 20+ at squamish may suit a smaller sail... So maybe it could be a more used sail locally. I haven't used 3.7 wind foiling yet but should have a few times.

Rigging a small sail. Don't do what I did.

I used the smallest sail I had at the Wall in the Gorge. Wind was wicked; no problem more outhaul to flatten the sail.

What happens when the sail is too flat, the draft will move. Depending on the wind/gust, the pull of the sail could be towards the luff or near the clew. Uncontrollable sail, lesson learned.
