Hey Guys,

The pressure gradient just switched big time to Westerly through Juan de Fuca Strait. Sheringham Point, Race Rocks and Smith Island are all pumping now out of the west at 35+ Knots. Whidbey is forecasting west winds gusting to 45 knots at their airport this evening.

This is the tell tale sign that the cold front is passing through, ushering in the big westerlies through Juan de Fuca.

The current big SSE-S winds at Boundary Bay are going to start to wind down quickly with frontal passage.

Be cautious of chasing the big swell in the middle of the Bay with sunset in 2 hours. The wind will probably drop from 40 to 20 or less very quickly once that cold front passes.

Swimming in the dark sucks......

Unfortunately the wind switched to WSW around noon. The morning was not bad, sailed from 9 to 10:30 when things started to get weird, wind moved SW and the waves got choppy fast. Not feeling good, recovering from a 24 hour stomach flue, which made every piece of chop feel like someone punched me in the stomach, so packed it in. Some nice big waves on the outside for a while, sailed 4.3 flattened out, over powered at times but not bad. Got one nice big jump on an outside ramp and a few nice wave rides. Not as epic as I thought it was going to be but fun considering my condition. Crazy windy at my house now, trees coming down, sirens going off and the flashing just got ripped off my roof! White Rock cam looks epic but not sure it's sailable out there. Hope everyone was safe today!

Holy Crap Michael!

WSW is pretty much straight offshore at Centennial. Did anyone get caught out? Crazy the sensor at the Boundary Bay airport showed SSE to S the entire time.

Nicola never came around today. There was tons of wind but it had too much South in it and was side off. The north end of Stump Lake was cranking but nobody out today. Hopefully tomorrow will be a bit better before the temp drops and we get big time snow this weekend.

Cheers,

Chris

Boundary Bay is still showing SSE (170 Degrees) 35 Gusting 45 knots at 2:50pm. I wonder what direction it’s blowing at Centennial right now........

Didn't have time to head to CNL this morning so went to Crescent Beach instead. Arrived around 9:30 am and rigged my modified 3.5m (=3.3) sail and took out the 73L. It was slightly side off (SSE) and gusty but steadied out once I got out about 50m. Waist to shoulder high waves with a few bigger sets farther out but I could see some even bigger sets breaking about 100 metres upwind at the edge of one of the deeper channels. The 3.3 was just right in the lulls but had to completely sheet out in the gusts. Caught a few scary port airs and was slammed down hard so kept it simple after that. Came off the water by 11:00 AM and checked out the point to see how the waves were wrapping. Definitely surfable with a slightly lower tide but looking at Young's pic at 1pm, the waves looked to have doubled in size after the switch to SSW. Nice to get out but should have rigged the 3.0 instead.

Where are you seeing SSE for bbay???

This is the actual:

The wind needs to clock pure W to be trouble at bbay, SW it just washes you up to beach grove. There was 30 minutes of pure W during the switch though, but it dropped slowly so people probably got in okay.

Crescent would have been the only sailable place this afternoon with the wind direction and tide height.

It was 30g50 all afternoon though so very challenging conditions, 5m or smaller kite required and not too many people have those in their quivers.

Ouch! I hope that guy got rescued off the pier. It would be a bad move to try and swim that with those waves and all that debris in 8 degree water.

[quote="Slappy"]Where are you seeing SSE for bbay???

Hi Slappy,

Sorry I wasn’t clear on the Boundary Bay part before. I meant at Boundary Bay Airport, CZBB, the latest METAR was still showing SSE at 170 degrees. Even now the winds are showing South, 180 degrees, at 32 Gusting 44 knots.

I would always lean to the sensor at the airport versus the Boundary Bay sensor when the wind is SSE or greater. It gives you a better picture of what to expect on the outside.

The sensor at the beach is great to know if you’ll be powered from the shore or not.
