Scored a great session at Mags 99. Chimichanga with chorizo and potato :D :D :D

The Spit was good too. Lit on 9m+surfboard (steady WSW 20-25) from 12:30-3pm. 15+ kiters (James, Paul, Cash, Chris ....) and 2 windsurfers (Ewart and Richard).

tempted to start Squamish, but I cant't stand carrying gear, depending on free time.

Alton, windsurfing, for average days at Squamish (25-30knots) what would be the sail and board volume that would fit most days.
my weight: 64Kg.

I need a basic setup, thinking 80l + 4.5m sail, any more wind I would go home. Can't carry 3 sails 2 boards like everybody else.Learning slowly is the plan, no rush to become anything, just a hobby, some planing and play around over 22 knots (when my 7m sail is too much).

Won't buy anything for months, but I'll start looking. Based on your 5000's sessions, give me a 2 liner if possible. (gear year as well). Thx

the floaty, 100 litre, 80l, 3 board advice may not work. If you think it's worth it.

It's rare that Squamish reaches 25-30 knots. Usually only 16-25 but very predicable. What gear do you have now? Maybe it will work.

You are 64 kg. I recommend 1 board. Maybe FSW 85 to 95 litre. 1 sail. 4.5 or 5.0. Maybe a second sail about 0.5 or 0.75 metre smaller. If you're a beginner, then bigger board, and bigger sail.

that's what I wanted to hear.

Alton, 130liters+7m sail for light wind. Board way too big (a boat) when it's over 22 knots (gusting) at Squamish (I was done, literally, on 130/6m).
LS, yes I may go with 85 litres+4.5m sail (6m sail was too big when I tried it at Squamish,3 years ago).

if I can waterstart comfortably, not feel overpowered, planing and exercising, I'm all good. I like Squamish in the summer, we are lucky it's there as plan B.

Thx.

If you start early enough (before the crowds arrive), your 130L/7m will work well for the first hour or two.

For example, look at this morning's graph. If you started at 11:30am, you'll get about 2 hours TOW with your 130L+7m. Serious slalom sailors will take the 7m in 25+ knots in Squamish.

Alton, I agree. that's what I used to do. When I was overpowered after 2 hours (starting around 10am), it was funny to see everybody ready to start sailing after I was done. That was good for a while, but the heavy gear is killing my progress nowadays (if any), I may need to try something new.

Roberts+7m sail (severne) on 25 knots it can get scary, it's like I am setting some world speed record. I feel the need to go back to basics, do a few mistakes on smaller gear before undertaking 25 knots, by then I can compensate errors based on experience... otherwise I will probably get my first chopper ride to VGH from Squamish (probably the last one too). :D

That's a good set up for sailing out from Nexen. Nice launch and no fee. You might find an 85L 4.5 small at Squamish most days, unless you stay in the river. You are welcome to test drive my 87L Quad and see how you do before buying something.

Michael, it's in my mind. 90ltr-4.7m may be the one. Thx for the offer.

It's ON everywhere... you guys should be in the water.

Crap, I am missing it.

GB: A couple of thoughts.

  • Nexen: wind is often lighter there and parking more convenient (closer to the water) so you may have more luck with your existing gear there on hotter summer days
  • Low tide: first time back at Squamish you may want to watch for a lower tide day > 2 m so there bank is shallow or exposed (to make launching/standing easier)
  • Sails: you are welcome to take any of my rigs for a spin as you are likely one sail size smaller than me (4.5 or 5.3 might be of interest) to try out size and softer four batten sail
  • Boards: You are welcome to try my boards, but at 115 and 92 they are likely too big and too small. There are others on here in the same weight-class as you and they might be willing to let you take a spin on their board(s)

/edit: Similar ideas to M (typing at the same time) :D ;)
