NE Outflow Tuesday / Wednesday

Weather talk and On Site Reports (604)800-2770

by Chris Klohn » Mon Nov 23, 2015 5:58 am

Big Arctic high pressure ridge pushing out through the inlets Tuesday afternoon / Wednesday am. Expect NE 20-30 knots at 3rd Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday am. Squamish spit will be an option Tuesday as well for a sideshore outflow in big winds.

The temperatures are typically warmer on the first day of an outflow through Howe Sound due to the compressional heating. By the second day, Wednesday am, it'll be below freezing everywhere.

Cheers,

Chris

Chris, do you think the outflow will blow down Indian Arm? The orientation of the inlet is very similar to the Howe Sound (NNE). More willing to try a crazy arctic outflow closer to home if possible..

Hey AG,

Your guess would be as good as mine :D One spot that I've wind surfed several times and I know works on outflows is Harrison Lake. It's good right on the beach in town and at the Rivtow Marina. Nice crystal clear flat water for freestyle too. Not sure if that would be closer for you compared to Squamish or 3rd?

Cheers,

Chris

+8 C at Pam Rocks and +3 C at BB @ 4am. Nice compressional heating with the outflow just starting up. Squamish spit and 3rd should be good from 12pm onwards. Looks like a bit too much east for Porteau Cove. Howe Sound will be warmer then 3rd today. Get out today before the deep freeze tonight

Cheers,

Chris

Squamish looks to be a very pleasant NE 15, gusting 40 mph with an air temp of 4 degrees ("feels like -1").

Point Roberts is showing 7 degrees ("feels like 5"), but the outflow has yet to kick there ~

/edit
I have to admit this one caught my interest - San Pareil (aka 'Columbia Beach South') - 7 degrees and 35 knots (even the gust reading is smooth).

On the island for work this month and conveniently had today off! I wasn't expecting wind so it was a great surprise when the trees were all moving this morning.

Had a double session, first Columbia on the 4.2 nice wave rides but ramps were the wrong angle for jumps. Then checked out San Pareil it looks so good I put on a wet wetsuit and had a great 4.7 session with great jumping ramps and more nice wave rides.

From the locals apparently a NW is better at San Pareil and the waves here are the best at low tide (due to a sandbar). A bit of a shore break at high tide but not too bad as long as you time it! The waves were still pretty good at high tide.

Perfect timing! Should be a great time to be on the Island, hopefully we'll see you over there.
Have fun!
