We should be good if as long as our sails aren't frozen to our masts and we can roll up the sails.

OSR Centennial... Cold and windy.... Nice size swell for an Easterly but on dead on shore. The sea ice on the shore looks like a snow cone and the shore break looks like a giant slurpee. Hope things warm up by this afternoon.

You should have tried 64th st at the end of mud bay? I think the tide is high enough today. I dare you to go in the water.

Well...from my vantage point here at Centennial it is blowing straight out of the East at 25mph OAT is -2c making a windchill of roughly -18c!!!! Oh, forgot to mention the piles of ice blowing up onto the beach (no, I'm not kidding!).
Seriously hardcore stuff! I'll wave to you though!

How was it guys?

I was just on the Ion website and see their top of the line suit is rated to -12!!!! I'll have to grab one for Nicola early in the spring. Was the ice tough to get through or broken up onshore? The southeast corner of Point Roberts sets up nicely for peeling waves on the E-NE direction if you can stand the cold.

Cheers,

Chris

First sub zero session. No as bad as I expected but the first time I warmed up my hands was crazy painful. Beautiful blue sky and nice small but clean swell if you sailed up way past the boarder marker to the point at Point Roberts. The ramps were steep and set up for some nice jumps. Jibes were hard as the board deck was covered in ice as well as my boom, also my sail started getting heavy once the ice started building up but all in all it was a really fun day.
Was nicely powered in the gusts so glad I went with the small sail and big board as I wanted to spend as little time in the water as possible. The sun went behind the trees near the end and the temp dropped fast so I called it a day. It was hard de-rigging with all my gear frozen. Glad Alton and Chris joined me.
:D
Photos coming soon.

What a great arctic session this afternoon at the Boundary Bay Boat Launch.

Michael, Chris (MX Chris) and I had to move from Centennial Beach to the Boat Launch to avoid a long cold walk to deeper waters.

ENE 20-25 (2pm - 3:30pm) with small but steep knee high waves were perfect for jumps and tons of fun for some smooth gybes on 5.2/93L (Michael on 4.7/110L). Surprisingly good for a easterly.

Bright sunny sky made up for the -1°C chill. Water temperature and warm wetsuit were very pleasant. However, frozen fingers needed some time to acclimatize. Frozen boom, board deck and heavy ice on sail didn't have any major downsides.

After an hour as the sun and temperature dropped, I instantly lost feeling in my feet and quickly headed back to shore to end the day.

De-rigging icy sails was challenging. Separating the frozen top and bottom mast pieces was accomplished with Michael's hot tea and a tug of war. Could not roll my sail (with a frozen luff) tight enough to fit into the bag so had to de-frost it in a heated car.
